If you’ve been reading the news lately, you must have been seeing terms like ‘Blockchains,’ ‘web3.’ Quite strange, right? Don’t fret, in this article, I’ll explain what web3 is and the major differences between web3 and its predecessor, web2.

What is web2?

If you’re reading this article on your smartphone or computer, you are most likely accessing it through a website that is hosted on web2. How? Web2 refers to a version of the internet that is known and used by most of us today. It is dominated by internet companies that provide services and products in exchange for your data. Companies like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter are examples of companies built on the web2.

That’s not so difficult to understand, right? Follow me, let’s dig into web3.

Web3 and why is it different to web2?

Blockchain was first introduced in 2008 by Satoshi Nakamoto who invented Bitcoin, a digital currency that allows you to buy and receive payment without the control of banks or governments. However, In the context of Ethereum, web3 refers to decentralised applications that allow anyone regardless of location participate in the web without someone else limiting their participation or selling their data.
